A programming paradigm - or a design philosophy
- A generic program will work on a number of different types, which are not related by subtype relationships
- Generic programming emphasizes requirements on arguments
Lifting
- Generalizing one or more concrete functions as a single algorithm
- Typically with use of type parameters - templates
- Without sacrificing efficiency
Compile time duck typing
- Assuming requirements on the type arguments
Using the idea of concepts (§24.3, 4ed)
- The template's requirements for its type arguments
  - Expressed with a type predicate
  - In terms of a static_assert - for improved error messages
